Three members of law enforcement were killed and at least 15 others got wounded in what appears to be premeditated detonation from gas at a rural property in Italy's north.

Sequence of Events

The blast was triggered as officers and emergency crews entered the property near the Verona region to enforce an removal notice for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female were arrested at the location and a third person who escaped subsequent to the explosion was apprehended shortly later. Each of them have been transported to hospital.

The blast could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the location revealed the building turned into a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” said the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.

Background and Motive

The president of the Veneto area, President Zaia, stated the property was under an removal notice due to debts accrued by the siblings.

Negotiators had been assigned to talk with the family members who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the officers arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the siblings set off the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander Commander Papagno told news outlets.

“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the detonation directly hit our members,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also located at the site, the minister said.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the incident included an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a emergency responder.

As stated by the local prosecutor, the building was in a poor condition and had was without power.

He was convinced the detonation had occurred on a story above the entrance and told journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the incident, he mentioned officers had “heard a whistle, probably the propane tanks being opened”.

Local Response

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants stated to reporters, noting that the family members had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in commemorating the three men who had been killed in the line of duty.
