Thomas Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Aggression So Long As England's Star Leaves His Ego at the Door.

A single omission did the trick. A second one and it might have appeared vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, who is extremely shrewd not to know that claiming the World Cup trophy is probably going to require contributions by the talented midfielder, even if it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to adapt to the tactical structures and player rankings necessary with the national team now that he is back in Tuchel's supportive environment.

The manager wants the player's competitive fire, his passion, but it is a matter of harnessing it constructively. Skill counts but the squad understand from past setbacks that there is a price to pay when celebrity dominates. Still, a statement has been delivered.

The midfielder was given food for thought after his omission of the previous squad. He observed the national side qualify at next summer’s World Cup in his absence. He saw the young talent perform brilliantly as a high-pressing No 10. He listened as Tuchel talk about loving the team's dynamism and ethics. Naturally, he has responded in top form, finding the back of the net for Real Madrid versus their rivals and the Italian side. His selection was inevitable; another omission would have put his tournament chances hanging by a thread.

The hope is that the manager will have a midfielder focused on frightening rivals rather than his own colleagues. After all, on a pure footballing level, there is no value to creating tension with one of the best players in the world. The best outcome is that his period on the sidelines has made him realize that playing for one's country is a valuable, uncertain thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now provide cover around the youngster after demonstrating that he is not afraid to make big calls.

“There is no problem regarding him, there is no problem with the character,” Tuchel commented. “Bellingham just has a competitive streak. It takes a sharp mentality to succeed at the top that he has. Everyone must support him and create a setting which he can use his drive in matches and for the objectives we are working towards as a team.”

Bellingham dominated the spotlight at Tuchel’s squad announcement for the upcoming final group games versus Serbia and Albania. Who else? Well, how about another talent? Here is a further gifted playmaker requiring coaching. He has not played for England since spring and has struggled to hit the heights this year but Tuchel was impressed by the 25-year-old after how he played in his club's victory versus the German side recently.

The issue, though, is how to use the various creators at the team's disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze merit inclusion and there will be a good argument to include Cole Palmer once he is fit after a fitness issue. Would taking multiple creators to the tournament be an overkill? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the correct balance at the European Championship. He compromised by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the same XI, cramping Harry Kane’s influence as a result.

It is hard to see Tuchel doing similar if it hurts the offensive structure. There is room for a single playmaker, with quick attackers on the flanks. Clear roles is beneficial. He is selected as a No 10. The new call-up, called up for the first time, is a central midfielder and the returning Adam Wharton will vie with Elliot Anderson as a defensive midfielder. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for the City star, who must play through the middle. Tuchel prefers him near Kane. “It is illogical to ask Foden: ‘We want you on the pitch but no spot exists in your preferred role, could you fill in at the left side? Or the right wing?” he said. “He is to feature in the central attacking zone, through the center. I've long had this vision about him for a long time. I think it suits him the most.”

He conceded there are occasions when Foden has appeared uncomfortable in an national jersey. “You feel almost like, ‘Does he like it?’ And a player like him who has this childish joy to play football, then clearly an issue exists, be it his role, the environment, I don’t know.

“I think he is additionally so used to playing for Man City in a certain structure, with a defined role. I think he benefits greatly from clear instructions. What is my position? In which positions am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? What are my to defend?

The manager discussed Bellingham bursting through for tap-ins and the other drilling in goals from 18 yards. He said he has a extended list of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have dropped out. A new face is rewarded for his excellent performances for City at defense. Intrigue is high.

The omission of the striker means there is no direct replacement for Kane in the selection. Fascinatingly, he hinted at deploying Foden as a false 9 against one opponent or the other. Other options, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are alternatives if Kane be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is a moment for trying new things.

Meanwhile, it is also a moment to get Kane’s relationship with his teammate flowing. It's surprising that one must look back to the latter assisting the captain to net in a friendly win against Scotland in September 2023 to find the one and only time in 35 games for the national team when the pair linked up for a score. The coach will know that the two stars only passed to each other a single time during the team's ties with one opponent and Slovenia at the European Championship. The connection is missing.

“This is where eventually it becomes the duty of the individuals,” Tuchel stated. He is not afraid to deliver home truths. Remains a sense of Bellingham being on trial. He may not be guaranteed to start versus the upcoming opponents. Tuchel desires him onside but he will be monitoring him closely. Set aside the ego at the door. Doing so could turn a very strong squad into an even better one.
